Sonali Prasad

Indian writer and artist Sonali Prasad's current compositions examine social and environmental conditions through related language use. What soundings and textures are easily recognized, how those can be given new properties, and what routes can be set anew. She experiments with form and has used traditional and creative media practices, including longform reporting, poetry, data, documentary, installations, and visual art.

Siddharth Dasgupta

A novelist and poet, Siddharth Dasgupta (@citizen.bliss) writes fiction from lost hometowns. Currently the Editor of Visual Narratives with The Bombay Literary Magazine, Siddharth recently published his fifth book, All These Streets We’ve Known By Heart – which was shortlisted for the Rabindranath Tagore Literary Prize 2023. Siddharth has published 5 books so far and his articles have landed on the pages of notable publications such as Travel + Leisure, National Geographic Traveller, The Buzz, Harper's Bazaar, and other global publications.

Sapna Bhatia

Sapna Bhatia is a broadcast journalist and filmmaker. She has worked in India as an Anchor/Correspondent for Zee News and in England with CNBC Europe, APTN and Al Jazeera English. Her company TV News International provides video content to international broadcasters. She is a member of the foreign correspondents club of South Asia. She is an MBA and has a Masters in International Journalism from City University in London. Some of the documentaries made by her company have received critical acclaim including an Emmy nomination.

A National Award winner, Gautam Pandey is one of India’s accomplished wildlife filmmakers. He studied film in Canada and has won several national and international awards for his documentaries.

Born into a family of nature-enthusiasts, his
passion for filmmaking started at an early age and he is now focused on using films as a medium to
bring awareness about wildlife and conservation.

Gautam has been experimenting with technology to push the boundaries and find new ways to tell
stories and deliver conservation messages to new audiences. For the past few years he been
experimenting with cinematic 360 VR to create immersive experiences to tell stories and deliver
conservation messages to new audiences.

Rhea Gupte

Rhea Gupte is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer based in Goa, India. A storyteller at heart, her work explores the vulnerabilities and strengths of human emotions through the mundane, transient and often inanimate.

Her practice is resonant with an evocative play of color and a visceral combination of objects, spaces and words, lending to introspective reflection and thoughtful dialogue. Her body of work spans across digital art, photography, graphic design, videography, writing and she often combines these to produce work rooted in starting conversations around environmental justice and sustainability.

Rakesh Rao

A photographer, filmmaker and a science enthusiast who specializes in documenting scientific expeditions and research activities. He has been involved in several projects with his work taking him to the three Cryospheric polar regions of our planet (Arctic, Antarctic and the Himalayas) making him amongst the few documentary film makers to do so. His recent film “The Climate Challenge” won the Best Science Film award at the International Science Film Festival of India.

His work has been published in the book “90 Degrees South” and several of his photographs have been a part of international photo exhibitions, including the “Sur polar IV” held in Argentina in 2012, and the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) open science congress meeting held in Portland, USA . He has contributed for several newspapers, digital publications, magazines including National Geographic Travelers India, Sky and Telescope and several others.

"This was the first time I saw so many people, not just living, but celebrating who they are, boldly & beautifully. It challenged my understanding of the world & was a reminder of why I ever picked up a camera:

“Between Two Worlds” by Parboni Pallav Bose

In the desert air of Sangner, colour is everywhere, in vats, in cloth, in the wind. Known for its centuries-old dyeing traditions, this town near Jaipur has long been the beating heart of Rajasthan’s textile heritage.

“I captured this photograph in one of Sangner’s dye yards: a woman wearing the iconic Rajasthani tie-dye of Bandhani, photographed in the dye yard. She’s marked by tiny, constellation-like dots passed down through generations; each knot a memory, each pattern a prayer.

It was important to photograph these women because traditionally in Rajasthan, they spearhead the tying of the bandhani or leheriya, while the dying is done by the men. Fabrics always have a strong link with women, where skills & pieces of clothes are generationally passed down to be safeguarded.

Beyond that is a portrait of a woman, representing her role in cultural continuation and a perceivably male-dominated industry.

🌸In Ladakh, life thrives with resilience.

This series by Kedar Bhide (@kedarsbhide) captures stories from Earth’s harshest frontiers.

📷 1: At peak of winter in Ladakh, when the Mercury plummets and high winds start caressing the frozen Tso Moriri, it slowly looses control. With sheer excitement, the lake starts exploding into these frozen diamonds adorning the frozen landscapes with glistening jewels.

📷 2: The Changpa Yak, on the frozen Tso Kar lake, is the only animal that comfortably continues to graze, even when the high winds and the temperatures of minus 20s hit.

📷 3: Kyun Tso 1 & 2 at 16,800ft are completely wild landscapes in Changthang, Ladakh. “Though the absence of snow in January is very worrisome news, it allowed me to visit these areas, which I couldn’t in the last 15 years of my Ladakh Winter Pilgrimages. The frozen beauty was out of this world.”

📷 4: Icescapes. When lakes freeze at peak of winter in Ladakh, you are introduces to a Pandora’s box, where all around the ice and light gifts you possibilities.

📷 5: Tibetan Wild Ass, or locally known as Kiyangs, grazing in vastness of cold desert in Ladakh winter. Temperatures often plummet to - 40° C on these plains even during daytime, if it’s cloudy.

🗻Even high in the Himalayas, resilience has its limits.

Through Kedar Bhide's (@kedarsbhide) lens, we introduce you to its residents - some rare, some resilient, all increasingly at risk.

📷 1: Palla's Cat (also known as Manul) watching the movement of Voles and Pikas, planning its hunt, one early winter morning in Changthang, Ladakh.

Being hunted for its fur & habitat loss in the wake of climate change are one of the few things that continue to threaten its population.

📷 2: Eurasian Lynx in its snow environment. Rare, elusive & data deficient, this cat is widely distributed in Ladakh, from the Nubra Valley to Changthang & Zanskar.

More research is needed to look at the conservation status of this species in India.

📷 3: The Tibetan Argali, a giant amongst wild sheep, is classified as Endangered by the IUCN. It's estimated that around 600-800 animals survive in India, and 400-600 of these are in Eastern Ladakh and some, in Sikkim.

📷 4: The Snow Leopard, called the Grey Ghost for good reason, is vulnerable. Its territory is shrinking, its prey thinning out. A single disruption can unravel entire ecosystems, but it helps anchor.

These animals have weathered centuries of isolation and cold. But climate change is shifting the odds, fast.

Through juxtaposition, we witness India's changing rivers & their impact on the lives of those who depend on them.

"These two photos were taken in two different cities with a Fujifilm X100f camera 23mm fixed lens.

📷 1: Kolkata during Chhath Puja.
A woman was praying for good health & fortune for her family in deep water for an hour. The water of the pond was full of waste, but to me, she seemed like the sun, the centre of a universe; the surrounding water body & the waste, the stars, planets, and comets of this universe, rotating around her.

📷 2: Varanasi, the place where the Ganges resides. After the famous Dev Deepawali, the river, which we call ‘Maa’, turns into a river full of waste.

The Ganges holds deep spiritual significance in Hindu belief, revered as the most sacred of rivers. Along its banks, rituals of life and death unfold daily, nowhere more so than at Manikarnika and Harischandra Ghats, iconic cremation sites. With the “Namami Gange Programme,” a government-led initiative, efforts are underway to rejuvenate the river through improved waste management and treatment systems.

“This was one of those moments that proved how I was meant to be in the right place at the right time.

I’d been waiting for almost two years to capture this shot. The last time, I missed it opportunity by mere seconds—as I moved forward & the performance unfolded behind me.

This year, I walked with the crowd, & suddenly found myself right in the middle of it—just as the Tandav was about to begin.

In that instant, everything else faded away. My only focus was nailing the shot.

I had only my 24-70mm lens with me. Initially, I had envisioned capturing this moment with a 16mm, but at that point, I had to make the most of what I had.

So, I did—choosing to capture the moment rather than risk missing it again.”

During Shivratri, people either carry idols of Shiva and Parvati or dress up as them, participating in a grand procession known as Shiv Barat as they parade through the city.

Alongside them, Aghori sadhus perform the intense and energetic Aghori Tandav, showcasing their spiritual fervour. The streets are packed with devotees, making it challenging to capture images amidst the dense crowd and electrifying atmosphere.

And yet, Arun’s shots are nothing short of breathtaking, capturing the intense energy reverberating through the performance!

"This is something you don't get to see often. Of course, the sea cucumber didn't budge an inch so the flatworm had to move on."

"One must be careful, as they can get aggressive and give painful bites."

📷 4: Squid Embryos Inside an Egg Mass.

"Squids lay their eggs in large petal-shaped bunches which are attached to a substrate. When you look closely, you can see the tiny baby squids in their transparent eggs.

In this image, you can even see their red-coloured eyes. These egg masses can be observed on Mumbai's shores during low tides.

Note: I have increased the contrast and saturation quite a bit to bring out the details in this one."

A Tale Of Two Cities, by Sarang Naik (@sarangnk90)

This shot brilliantly juxtaposes a colony of Zoanthids-glowing under the light of an ultraviolet flashlight-against the backdrop of a lit Mumbai city skyline.

It subtly highlights Mumbai’s marine life- a forgotten treasure that is under constant threat & continues to be ignored in the face of the city’s bigger ideas.

What are Zoanthids?
They are an order of Cnidarians, similar to Corals and commonly found in coral reefs. These can be seen on Mumbai’s rocky shores during low tide.

"While I was shooting one such patch of Zoanthids, I discovered that they glowed brilliantly under UV light.

However, it is important to know that UV light is damaging to the eyes. Even momentary exposure can cause temporary blindness, and prolonged exposure may cause cataracts. Utmost caution and safety must be followed when using it."

Throwback: An Exceptional Adventure in Sri Lanka

A kaleidoscope of colours, ancient cultures, and breathtaking landscapes, the Expedition in Sri Lanka, to this date, remains an enriching memory.

From the vibrant street life and colonial architecture of Colombo & country’s artistic tapestry at the Barefoot Gallery to the cobbled streets, charming boutiques, and stunning sunsets of Galle - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - we soaked in all of it.

Our exploration extended beyond Sri Lanka’s urban centres - to the local fishing communities & their sustainable practices, tea plantations that let us peek into the island’s agricultural heritage, and a cooking demonstration that introduced us to the flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine.

The mask-making workshop in Ambalangoda provided a hands-on experience of Sri Lankan traditions, while the Lunuganga Gardens showcased the country’s architectural heritage - allowing us to experience its resilience and rich history.

Sri Lanka captivated our hearts and minds, leaving us with a lasting appreciation for its beauty, culture, and people.

In our explorations of Demul - a picturesque village nestled in the Spiti Valley, we witnessed effortless, sustainable living in a technologically separated corner of the Himalayas.

Folklore says Demul was named after the female yak (Demo) - when 200 years ago, a shepherd lost one of his and wound up here in his search. Today, the village has about 50-60 homes, all moving to their own rhythms. The Collective made this village their home & documented its practices that sustain livelihoods.

We became part of this close-knit community that huddled around warm fires & passed plates of mouthwatering food to one another. Their flat-roofed mud houses, green pastures & community-centric entreprise is the soul of Demul’s story.

’Transitory’, by Bhoomi Gondalia

Bhavai, an ancient form of Gujarati folk-theatre, is characterised by its lively performances that blend drama, dance, and music.

It dates back to the 14th century and is known as a satirical and socially reflective art form, often addressing contemporary issues and critiquing social norms.

The performances happen in open spaces, with actors portraying a variety of characters, such as kings, gods, and common folk, often in humorous and exaggerated ways.

Bhavai’s most distinct mark is its vibrant costumes, expressive gestures, and the inclusion of improvisation, making it a dynamic and engaging theatrical experience.

It functioned as a counter-voice in a society marked by caste and class distinctions, by subverting the social norms of the cultural elite. It acted as a medium of entertainment and information, presented in a vernacular form.

The soul of Srinagar burns bright in the Old Town. Here, one can see the Jama Masjid dating back to the 1400s. It’s a stunning example of Kashmiri architecture, with its unique green pyramidal roof, pagoda-style minarets, and 370 pillars of the chinar tree.

As you walk deeper, you’ll find the narrow alleys and wooden bridges of the old town lined with fretworked eaves, hanging bay windows, and cantilevered balconies. Its rich history and culture is a multilayered narrative represented by the 15th-century Budshah Tomb to the Shankaracharya temple.

Contrary to what one sees on the internet these days, most of Goa is pretty much tucked away from the loudness of it all.

People quietly go about their days - working in fields or travelling to offices, spending Sundays napping and Friday evenings laughing over dinner with their loved ones. Through it all, Goa is bound by its mouthwatering meals, flavoured with fresh coconuts, dried kokum, palm jaggery, toddy vinegar and the salty undertones of the day’s catch.

When paired with fresh vegetable preparations of the day and steaming hot rice, these meals could put even the most resilient into a comfortable slumber.

Most Goan homes continue to use traditional tools like the aioli - a coconut scraper, or the grinding stone to make pastes. It says something about Goa's stillness in an ever-changing world.

The Collective set out on an adventure, sailing from the Dal Lake to the Nigeen Lake.

The Dal Lake, with its houseboats above and a vibrant ecosystem pulsating beneath, held us in awe. The pristine Nigine offered a glimpse of untouched beauty, wrapped in thin layers of fog and a mystical chill. Between here and there, we kept an eye out for little stories - sneak peeks of those just living their everyday lives in this paradise.

The flower & vegetables at the floating market had taken centre stage, still using the barter system to sell their wares, while the old & the young just go about their days. Meanwhile, the travellers float away, unaware of the stories they’re becoming a part of.

Here, everything had a story to tell - of life in Kashmir, the struggles of every day and the little joys in between.

We left pieces of our hearts & took others’ back in exchange - just like the vendors do in Kashmir’s floating market, every day.

A COLLECTIVE of writers, storytellers, authors and artists joined us in the valleys of Zabarwan as the STORYTELLING RESIDENCY unfolded in the laps of the mountains of Harwan, at a quaint boutique called Nadis.

Its traditional interiors, quiet corners and infinite views stoked our creative thoughts and fostered rich conversations. At this spacious property, Kahwah tea was our friend & the sessions our solace.

Through explorations of this mystical land and deep dive sessions with our mentor Siddharth Dasgupta (@citizen.bliss) , the collective recalibrated their senses to the beautiful surroundings and put forth their own narratives of the valley.

Together, we created magic

If the people of Spiti made “A Day in My Life” a video, it would be a mesmerising yet poignant montage where the lens would trace a path from the serene landscapes of barley fields to the snow-capped Himalayas, seamlessly capturing the rhythm of life in this high-altitude desert.

The warmth of shared laughter around the fires in their mud houses would contrast sharply with the harsh reality of long, isolating winters outside. The video would showcase the resilience of a community dependent on a few precious months for cultivation, their faces etched with a mix of hope and worry as they grapple with the uncertainties of climate change. It would be a testament to their enduring spirit, their deep-rooted connection to the land, and the challenges they face in preserving their way of life.

The highlight though, would be the pride on their faces for their homeland - a majestic yet vulnerable part of the Himalayas.

Joining the Collective on the Storytelling Expedition, this group of enthusiasts, aspiring filmmakers and curious photographers are ready to explore local narratives in Spiti!

Through 8 days of exploring the valleys & engaging with local communities of Spiti, participants will master the art of impact storytelling using the power of photography & films, guided by Rakesh Rao, a science filmmaker. Together, they will observe, collaborate, and co-create their own narratives, document cultures, and exchange knowledge on fine art storytelling.
